West Virginia is located in the Appalachians and was originally part of Virginia. The capital and largest city is Charleston. It became a state during the Civil War and was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863.

William Catlett was born about 1695 in Lancaster County, Virginia. He was the son of David Catlett and Mary Bathurst.

William's children may have included:

James Catlett
John Catlett (1716),
Ruth Catlett (1717, married John Lemen),
Robert Catlett (1721, married Mary Floyd),
Peter Catlett (married Ann Calmes).

Some of the Catletts were early settlers in, what is now, the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

William died about 1788 in Frederick County, Virginia.

From the above it is fair to presume that William, who came from Lancaster to Frederick, some time about 1735-1750, and appears for the last time in tax book of Frederick Co. in 1788 for 500 acres, had four sons, viz

(1) John, of Farquier, will 1778, whose decendants are given beneath.

(2) James, mar. Jane . He had deed to land in Frederick Co., 1753, and was in a poll for Geo. Washington in Frederick Co. in 1758. Will given about 1797, and had issue.

(3) Peter, Mar. Ann Calmes, dau. of Marquis Calmes, b. 1705, d. 1773, mar., 1725, Winnifred Waller, b. 1709, d. Oct. 6, 1857. No issue. He bought "White Post'' farm in 1759 (see deed above), and at his death bequeathed it to his nephew, Henry Catlett (son of Robt.), who mar. Miriam Calmes, the niece of Ann Calmes above. Peter's will, 1785,given above, mentions the sons of his two bros., Robt. and James.

(4) Robt., b. 1721, d. Feb. 26, 1803, mar. Mary Floyd, living in 1816, and had numerous issue. He left no will, but his estate was administered 1804 (Frederick Co. Records. Book 7, page 191).

A tithable was a person for whom a head tax was to be paid. The definition varies over time and place, but generally included members of the potentially productive labor force.
A poll tax is a tax levied on every poll. The definition of a poll also varied, but was generally a man of legal age.
